Why nano?!

Imagine you woke up one morning and discovered your head had been shrunk overnight and is now 4.5 billion times smaller than normal. A single hair would seem to be the distance of 450 football stadiums, your nails would seem to grow by 1 meter a second, and a football would seem like the size of the planet earth.

You are now able to see life on the nanoscale, which to the normal human eye is invisible. Instead of seeing your computer or your clothes when you peeked up from your covers, you would see the amazing piles of atoms and molecules that make up the world you usually inhabit.

Nanoscience is the study of life on this scale. Nanotechnology is moving around these "building blocks", the atoms and the molecules that you see, to make totally new and outrageous gadgets and gizmos and to improve already existing technologies. Nanoscientists, using super electron microscopes, are able to actually see and change matter on the nanoscale to produce materials that are as light and as soft as cotton, as flexible and elastic as rubber but as strong as steel.

Why should you care?

Because Nanotechnology is going to change the world forever. Everything familiar to you in the world around you has the possibility to be explored and possibly improved by nanotechnology. As with every new technology, there are risks involved too, so its important that you know about these risks and can plan for them so that you can maximize nanotech’s amazing benefits.

in2nano is a program for Egyptian high school students to introduce them to the new world of nanotechnology. 20 schools will be visited and a Nano FunDay will be open to the public - we encourage students and families to take part, hosted by the British University in Egypt.
